Damansara Village Steamboat @ Imbi KL

It was such a surprise when I first received an email from Patrick Teoh (yeah, and his infamous April Fool's duck story) whom's voice I used to love during his DJ times with Radio 4. He had a venture in this restaurant called Damansara Village together with his daughter Melanie and son-in-law which was first opened in Kg Sg Kayu Ara in PJ and now another outlet at Jalan Utara off Jalan Imbi. He invited a few bloggers to have a steamboat party at his new outlet and without any hesitation, I accepted the invitation!

Besides serving steamboat, this place does some pretty impressive meat dishes that goes very well on its own or with rice if you like. The first-must-order-dish would be the steamed Organic Chicken which is also known as "Village Cho Kai" (1/2 at RM49 and whole at RM98). These chickens are reared on their own farm and fed a diet of all natural feed of corns, oats and vegetables for 100 days. This steamed chicken is lightly salted, smooth and needs a little chewing. Although it's a little chewy, it's not the tough chewy texture that you get from poor quality chickens.

Next on the menu would be the Bamboo Clams steamed with a small dash of chilli padi which is very tasty despite a little spicy for my liking. The Village Special Steamed Clams is cooked with Chinese wine, lots of wolfberry (kei zhi), ginger and parsley (priced at RM20). The fish, a snake head fish which is also known as "sang yue" in chinese is another specialty at this restaurant. This "sang yue" is caught in the wild unlike the other restaurants that serve this fish reared from fish farms. Therefore, this fish is free from the earthy and muddy smell. The flesh is tender, sweet and best served steamed with ginger and soya sauce.

The Pepper Pork Stomach Soup warrant a mention. Afterall, it's one of my favourite soup of all times and this place does it well. However, I think next time I shall request them to reduce the parsley as I am never a fan of the pungent green leaves. The Pork Knuckle Vinegar is also another dish that I dig. It's not vinegar-sour but sweet and I think this is very much a ladies' dish, provided you like fatty knuckles!

The Village Salt Baked Crabs in Wok (RM48)

We were all filled to the brim and suddenly the steamboat pot came and was laid onto the stove on the table. The waiter poured in the herbs for the soup and then followed by a cup of chinese wine. There are 3 types of soup served here. The standard clear soup (RM18.80/pax and min order of 2 pax). If you want the herbal soup, its RM12 additional and the Pork Knuckle soup is at RM18.

The Herbal Soup

We were served an array of seafood and condiments for the steamboat. First, we had a plate of flower crabs, some mussels, abalone slices, fishballs, fish noodles, tofu and dumplings. The menu has a variety of set choices that you can choose from. They have many types of fishes, crabs, mantis prawns, clams, mutton slices, pork slices, and other meats to your whim and fancy. Not the average dishes you can find in a normal steamboat restaurant.

Then, Patrick gave us this piece of white thing and asked us to taste and then tell him what it is. I tasted a little and I think it tasted like abalone. I couldn't be wrong because I am so sick of abalone and virtually giving up eating them and so I cannot not recognize the taste of an abalone. It turned out to be (according to Patrick, wasn't sure whether he's telling the truth or not?) that it's made of tofu but with a taste of abalone. Ahh... fake abalone?!!

Patrick and his tiger prawns.

I swear by the tiger prawns that they serve. Priced at RM23 for 300g. It's all fresh and sometimes you can see the prawns jumping on the plates when it came to the table. We had to cover the prawns with a plate the last time I was here. Actually this is the 4th time I've been to Damansara Village and I have been very happy with their food.

The bloggers a.k.a foodies....
KY, Shaolin Tiger, Kim, Suanie, Cumi & Ciki, Bangsar-babe, Meena, Fireangel, & Yiling

We occupied the upstairs of the restaurant which can accommodate up to 3 tables. I guess we were put upstairs because we were noisy and we might be disturbing other patrons when they see us walking around and taking out our bulky SLRs and snapping away like a paparazzi every time when the food is served. Just as when I thought it's over, Mama Min took out her beautiful creation to satisfy our dessert palate.

This is not a MINI, it's Mama Min's car!

It was such a beautiful car complete with edible tyres! The cake was lovely and if you like this, you can order your customised cake from her website here.

Ciki (Cumi & Ciki), me, Patrick & Sue Lynn (Bangsar-Babe)

Patrick is such a good host and kept us entertained the whole night with his stories (except the stories from his blog!). Actually, before the Saturday dinner, he was also at the restaurant when I was dining with my friends on Tuesday night. We had lots of fun that night too minus the 30 year-old-whisky and Cuban cigars unfortunately. Thanks for the invite!

Inviting food bloggers for food review is cheaper than advertise in newspapers. However, most if not all food reviews by bloggers are less than impartial and can only be taken with a pinch of salt. Very often, positive comments/replies to the review are given by those invited bloggers.

Wonder how many blog readers visit these restaurants after reading the blogs.

waaa so fast!

food was super awesome though, seriously. ;)

Anonymous, you should try it for yourself

wow, their menu here looks a lot more extensive compared to their original outlet! and this location is much more convenient for those of us who work in the city...
btw, i seriously think i've never had pork stomach soup before. must remember to order it if i ever see it anywhere :D

Anon: Well, I went there 4 times prior to the invitation. The fact that I am returning time after time does not need any further explanation.

KY: yeah!! cekap!

Sean: Exactly. And this is easily accessible with ample parking.

by golly you are FAST! love the write up doll:)

Yums! Food looks good. Sorry I missed you on this one. My mid-year resolution must be to meet up with you somehow somewhere.

Oh, yummy seafood for steamboat! Zen~

Ah! Patrick Teoh's eatery!!! The place looks real classy for a steamboat place - something like those Coca steamboat restaurants...and the food looks real good too.

great food, awesome dinner, even better company!

The Jln Imbi shop opened about 2 months ago and you visited 4 times without blog about it? Hmmmmm

Invited by the famous Patrick Teoh himself... for me, die die must go :)
nowadays... eating chicken outside is so dangerous due to the growth hormone used. So my mom has her own mini farm to feed the chicken with corns and others stuff for a few months before actually slaughter them! She also has ample supply of kampung chicken too :)

eiling lim said...

Cumi & Ciki: actually the review on this place has been in my backlog for sometime.

Boo: Hey, yeah missed you again! Have to meet up soon!

Meena: Yeah, I wanted to go and say hi, but you were so busy. Next time yeah!

uLi: yes, and the ingredients are fresh too!

STP: This place is casual and comfy. very nice for family outing.

Suanie: I agree!

Anon: I only had some pics and it wasn't nice so I didn't post it up. It was in my backlog. This time, I brought my sis as the photographer. Any more problems?

Thule a.k.a leo: Yeah and the funny thing is, I met him just a few days before the steamboat invitation and when he saw me, he told me that there will be no more surprises already! Lol.. you're so lucky to have organic chicken to eat! Jeles...

Bangsar-bAbE said...

Patrick was so entertaining, and the tofu really tasted like abalone or pacific clams!

Nice seeing you again babe. See you this week ya!! ;)

Bruno’s at Jaya 33 is one example that was given positive review by invited bloggers but didn’t help to sustain the business.

patrickteoh said...

LOL...I was kind of expecting a comment like that from Anonymous 11:18PM. I guess cynicism in Malaysia is to be expected. Most reviews by bloggers can only be taken with a pinch of salt? It think all reviews should be read with an open mind. Unless you're really stupid. The bloggers who visted the restaurant may never return. That's not to say that the food is bad or the service awful. Perhaps steamboat or seafood isn't their preferred food choice. But there is nothing to stop a blogger or food reviewer from writing honestly about his/her experience. No?
And finally, yes inviting food blogggers for reviews is cheaper than advertising in newspapers. A small business cannot AFFORD to advertise in newspapers. And anyway, we prefer to spend our money on our friends. Food bloggers or not.

Thank you, 3iLing.

eiling lim said...

Bangsar-bae: Yeah see you this week ya! I need a drink!!!

ANon: That's why bloggers aren't that powerful either so why are you harping on us? Why don't you blame those papers or magazines that do tonnes of reviews weekly?

Patrick: You're welcome and thanks so much for organising such a nice "makan". What you said makes sense. I rather spend my money elsewhere than pay for the expensive adverts on papers or mags. And the bloggers came voluntarily and they have no obligation to blog if they don't like it. I'm sure you didn't make us sign any contracts!!! Lol..

Invited review is equivalent to hired gun, is hardly impartial or honest, only fool will take it wholeheartedly.

Given the ingredients and method used, find the foundation of cooking is rather poor.

Whatever it is, the best judge is the customers. As over half of the new restaurants fold up within the first three years, we shall return. If this restaurant is still around in 3 years time, we shall drop by for a dinner.

eiling lim said...

Anon: For your info, Damamnsara Village in kayu ara has been around for more than 3 years. Have you returned or have you even been there? But of course if every customer wait for the restaurant to operate for 3 years before they drop by, even a rojak stall will wind up!

Oh Patrick Teoh, that adorable rascal who is the heartthrob of many ladies in my younger days of the mid 70s. He could talk the hind legs of a donkey and a lot of girls were crazy over him with his mellifluous voice announcing some Great Pop songs or something.

Anyway, he is a great guy.....

Good company ya, eiling

eiling lim said...

Arthur: Ahh... yeas Uncle Lau. And I still like his voice! haha..

patrickteoh said...

Hey Arthur (I shall refrain from calling you Uncle Lau:-) Thanks for the kind words. Let me know when you can come over and try our food.

eiling lim said...

Patrick: Uncle lau is my dad's classmate. I have known him for many many years and he's a gemologist but he loves good food. I will definitely recommend him to come and try your restaurant!

An Ultra Higher Efficiency search that tends to make the Solo-Baric® L7 genuinely a statement item. The cone offers you deeper and stronger bass at greater listening levels with less distortion due to a smaller amount tendency to flex. Simply because, when a woofer cone flexes, there is a reduction of output. This decline of output translates into much less bass.

I've on all occasions liked things like sand clocks, lava lamps, and the like to good of fair-minded dissipate space staring at it as a cut of catharsis. In a way, it helps me with meditation, to mitigate lay stress and well-grounded fantasize fro nothing. That's why since I was a kid, instead of dolls and cars I've always at ease more of such pieces like sand clocks, lava lamps, tuneful boxes etc. So I was most enchanted when I start the 2-Laser + LED Shine Presentation Laser Top Gyroscope with Music Effects from protection the Toys section. It's like a tuneful thump, a spinning exceed, and a radiance show all rolled into one. Which is capacious relaxation! The gyroscope wishes whirl for round a minute. The laser slight show with accompanying music makes this gyroscope a rather incomparable tiny that my friends be suffering with also been most amused with.

My dogs are also pretty eccentric prevalent the laser gyroscope I got from They evermore attend the gyroscope as it spins, although at first place they kept barking at the laser light boast, and also because it produces music. But after they got employed it, they've stopped barking but just watch over following the gyroscope whenever I start spinning it. Kids are also bonny amused nearby it. On occasion it's moral to possess pleasing toys about the ancestry so that you can go away the diminutive on while the kids are being amused or playing with it while you live prepare viands or sock changed. The gyroscope is unified such fool with with this purpose.

The gyroscope I bought from has a dragon as a intent plot on it, and produces a gegenschein indicate with red, blue, and unskilled colours. Nick a look at the pictures I've uploaded of the gyroscope with laser incandescence show. The music produced from the gyroscope is not that expert but decorous enough to treat any chic guest to the house. The gyroscope is red and black, making it look extraordinarily imperturbable, and measure macho with that dragon imprint.

The music dismount attack show gyroscope runs on 6 LR44 batteries, which are replaceable anyway. I've also euphemistic pre-owned this gyroscope to their heels my girlfriend during our anniversary celebration. I did the cheesy chore of decorating the hostelry elbow-room with roses and when I led her in, I started up the gyroscope as correctly so that the laser torchlight register produces a ideal effect. I also had some battery operated candles so all the sunrise effects created a degree romanticist atmosphere. She loved it, at near the custom, to my relief. I also bought the candles from These days it seems to be my default shopping put in return all gifts and ideas in support of fancied occasions.

Since Christmas is coming, this laser lamp upstage gyroscope can perhaps be a superb Christmas give-away seeking the toddler or neutral the mollycoddle! Alternatively, the gyroscope can simply be a kindly addition to the established Christmas decorations. I can imagine placing it just about the Christmas tree and perchance spinning it when guests hit town in the house. Looks like is getting my duty thus far again!
